What is the same as a neoplasm?

A neoplasm is defined as an abnormal growth of tissue that results from uncontrolled, progressive multiplication of cells. The term specifically refers to any new and abnormal growth, which is commonly referred to as a tumor. Neoplasms can be benign or malignant and are characterized by their ability to proliferate and form a mass, which is why "tumor" is used interchangeably with "neoplasm."

Cysts, lesions, and abscesses do not imply the same characteristics as a neoplasm. While cysts are fluid-filled sacs within tissue, they don't denote an abnormal proliferation of cells in the same sense that neoplasms do. Lesions refer to any abnormal change in tissue, which can encompass various forms of damage, including, but not limited to, neoplasms. Abscesses are localized collections of pus resulting from infection, which is a distinct condition separate from the concept of a neoplasm. Therefore, "tumor" is the most accurate term that aligns with the definition of a neoplasm.
